中国经济网2007年12月20日消息：据网易网报道，据美国《大众科学》报道，最近，美国科学家发明一台神奇机器，取名为“霍克回收机”，能将轮胎等任何废物变成石油和天然气。
此机器人的发明人是弗兰克·普林格尔和霍克·洪甘。普林格尔说，“我不能肯定我能看到这台机器或发明能让我身边这位抽雪茄的64岁老头成为地球上最富有的人。此回收机可以将轮胎、岩石和塑料等任何东西马上变成石油和天然气。我已经通报石油公司，他们可能会来行刺我。”
此机器其实是一台微波发射器，可以将日常用品提炼成石油和天然气，至少可以加工任何碳氢化合物组成的东西。而这些东西在你身边到处都是，比如各种塑料。此机器的首个商业产品1小时可以将10吨汽车废物(轮胎、塑料和聚乙烯薄膜)变成很多天然气，足以产生1700万BTU(英国热量单位)能量。
普林格尔是在10年前开始打造此机器的，是受一场轮胎大火释放大量能量的启发才萌生此发明创意的。之后，他回家将一些轮胎碎片放入微波发射器中，当时他只是用此微波发射器做另一项研究。结果发现，轮胎变成了一堆灰似的东西，几小时后，他重返机器处，却意外发现不热的工作台台面上竟然有一坑黑色的污液。
他不知何故在台面上弄出一坑石油出来了。细想一下，原来是他提取出来的。石油是由碳氢化合物组成的。当微波加热轮胎时，就会将其分子链断裂，变成更小的组成部件：有黑烟末(一种像灰似的原料)和碳氢化合物气体，此气体可以燃烧，也可以浓缩成液体燃料。
普林格尔认为，其中的一些气体可以浓缩成为柴油。他想如果这样能加工轮胎，就可以加工任何碳氢化合物的东西。其中的诀窍就是每加工一种材料要采用其最适宜的微波频率。找到这一频率可能要测试1000万次。普林格尔用了10年时间来对数百种材料进行测试，已经花了100万美金。2004年，他与工程师朋友霍克·洪甘共同推出了这种商业化机器。
他们的首个订单在美国伊利诺斯州的洛克福特市的一处建筑中兑现，这是一台价值510万的微波机器，有小轿车大，名为霍克。此机器将送往纽约长岛的一家汽车回收公司，因为是此公司订购的。他们还收到了更多的美军订单，美军可能要用此机器来处理伊拉克的垃圾，如水瓶和食品包装。石油公司也想用此机器来气化页岩中截留的石油。
